The Best-Preserved Natural Floodplain in Europe

In addition to its rich plant and animal life, Lonjsko Polje is also the largest spawning ground for river fish in the entire Danube basin. It is unique because it is one of the few areas in Europe where traditional grazing practices have been preserved. This means that local residents use the floodplain grasslands for grazing livestock in a traditional system once the floodwaters recede.
