Lonjsko polje Nature Park
It is one of the best-preserved natural floodplains in Europe
Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is located in the central part of the Republic of Croatia, along the middle course of the Sava River, approximately 75 kilometers from the capital city, Zagreb.
It is one of the best-preserved natural floodplains in Europe and, thanks to periodic flooding, represents a unique treasure trove of biological and landscape diversity, not only in Croatia but also throughout Europe. In addition to its rich plant and animal life, Lonjsko Polje is the largest spawning ground for river fish in the entire Danube basin. It is also unique because it is one of the few areas in Europe where traditional grazing practices have been preserved. This means that the local population uses the floodplain grasslands for grazing livestock in a traditional system once the floodwaters recede.
Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is home to two villages with prestigious titles:
Čigoč – the first European Stork Village, recognized for its unique coexistence between humans and storks and the large population of these birds.
Krapje – the Village of Architectural Heritage, known for its beautiful wooden Posavina houses built from oak wood, some of which are over 200 years old.
Near Krapje is the Krapje Đol Ornithological Reserve, the first and oldest bird reserve in Croatia. It is an important nesting site for the spoonbill and many other wetland birds, making it a true paradise for bird lovers.
One of the four hiking trails in the park, the Border Guard Trail, leads to the ornithological reserve. Walking along this trail, visitors can observe native breeds typical of the region up close: the Posavina horse, the Turopolje pig, and the Slavonian-Syrmian Podolian cattle. Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
In the untouched nature and peaceful villages of Lonjsko Polje, visitors can enjoy cycling or riding on a vintage tractor, cruising the Sava River on solar-powered boats, or paddling canoes through the calm river branches. Starting this year, visitors can also enjoy boat rides on the Juran and Sofija along the Kupa River in the city of Sisak—a perfect prelude to visiting Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.
