Banovina covers 1,803 km² of hilly landscapes, with an average elevation of 300 meters. Its highest peak is on Zrinska Gora, standing at 615 meters. The region is intersected by numerous small watercourses, and a significant portion of its area is covered by forests. As a distinct Croatian historical region, Banovina began to take shape in 1595 along the Croatian-Ottoman border. Since this area was under the direct administration of the Croatian ban until the mid-18th century, it was called the Ban’s Land or Ban’s Frontier (Banalia Confinia). After the abolition of the Ban’s Frontier in 1881, the area became known as Banovina.
