
Description
The oldest written documents referring to Hrvatska Kostajnica and its surroundings are charters issued to the Vodica princes (later known as the Babonić princes) in 1200 by Hungarian-Croatian kings. During the 13th century, the Vodica princes expanded their estates to the area between the Una River, Žirovac, Zrinska Gora, and Hrvatska Kostajnica. In 1218, King Andrew II confirmed the Babonić princes’ rights and estates in the Pounje region.
Hrvatska Kostajnica was mentioned for the first time in history in 1240 in a charter by the master of the Templar order in Dubica, which confirmed the purchase of some land in the Dubica district. Describing the land, the charter states that the border “… reaches the road that leads from Kostajnica to Dubica…”
