Introduction
A Zero-Category Monument
During the battles with the Ottoman Empire, the construction of the Sisak Fortress began at the confluence of the Kupa and Sava rivers to halt the Turkish advance. Construction started in 1544 and was completed in 1550, when the fortress became operational for its primary defensive purpose. The building materials used predominantly came from the ruins of Roman Siscia.
The fortress was besieged three times by Hasan Pasha Predojević, an Ottoman military commander, until his final defeat on June 22, 1593, in the decisive battle that defended Sisak and the entire Kingdom of Croatia. During the battle, a garrison of about 300 soldiers was stationed inside the fortress. At the crucial moment, they joined forces with the Christian army led by Ban Toma Bakač.
The Old Town Fortress is currently closed to visitors due to damage caused by the earthquake on December 29, 2020.
