Lonjsko polje Nature Park

Discover the Undiscovered

Located in the central part of Croatia, along the middle course of the Sava River, Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is approximately 75 kilometers from the capital city of Zagreb. It is one of the best-preserved natural floodplains in Europe, serving as a unique treasure trove of biological and landscape diversity, not only in Croatia but across the entire continent.

In addition to its rich plant and animal life, Lonjsko Polje is the largest spawning ground for river fish in the entire Danube basin.

The park is also unique because it is one of the few areas in Europe where traditional grazing practices have been preserved. This means that local residents use floodplain meadows for grazing livestock after the floodwaters recede, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

Within Lonjsko Polje Nature Park are two villages with prestigious titles: Čigoč – the first European Stork Village, awarded for the harmonious coexistence between humans and storks, with a remarkable stork population; and Krapje – the Village of Architectural Heritage, renowned for its beautiful wooden Posavina houses made of pedunculate oak, some of which are more than 200 years old.

Visitors can explore the unspoiled nature and tranquil villages of Lonjsko Polje by cycling or riding vintage tractors, cruising the Sava River on solar-powered boats, or paddling canoes through the calm river branches.

Near the village of Krapje lies the Krapje Đol Ornithological Reserve, the first and oldest bird reserve in Croatia. It is an important nesting site for the spoonbill and many other wetland birds, making it a true paradise for birdwatchers.
One of the four walking trails in the park, The Border Guards Trail, leads to the ornithological reserve. Walking along this trail, visitors can observe indigenous animal breeds typical of this region up close: the Posavina horse, the Turopolje pig, and the Slavonian-Srijem Podolian cattle.
